A monthly pass

bvg.logo.gif So I’ve been buying my monthly BVG pass which includes unlimited rides on subway, bus and tram in the zones A and B for Berlin. And I am sure if it’s not just me, but I bet most of you BVG-riding folks had this “how many times do I need to take the subway to make it pay off”-thing going as well.

A monthly ticket costs 67 EUR, which is monthly not in terms of “from the first of the month until the end”, but rather valid for 30 days. It doesn’t matter when you buy it, so for example mine is valid from 11th January until 10th February. Anyway, having mastered all that, how many trips do I need to take?

2,10 EUR is the single trip (not the short trip), which is a ticket to get past more than six stops – which is the ticket I need to buy to get to work. So in theory, I need to go 32 times to make my monthly pass pay off.

The reality check is as follows, going once and it paid off. Actually, on the 12th January, I got checked twice on my way to work by clerks on the subway. So if I had paid the 60 EUR fine twice, then I could have paid a second month in advance.

Writing all this now, I just realized that it’s been almost two days since the last checkups on the subway. I wonder if there have been layoffs, or if they were just too busy checking on other lines.
