Is Berlin a metropolis?

Tesja is wondering and working on her degree dissertation for psychology at Humboldt University of Berlin and needs our help:
If you live in Berlin for at least one year and are 20 years of age or older, she would be happy if you’d help and take the survey.

She promised to let us know about the results, and actually, I’m very eager to find out, if Berlin is a metropolis or not!

What determines if a city is a metro, or not?

That’s pretty much the question, her work is trying to answer.
In my oppinion, it has a lot to do with subjective perception. This is especially true for Berlin, where I’d say it isn’t really a Metro [uh, how did it sneak into the Metblog network? ;) ], but others claim it is.

Yeah, how did you sneak in? :P Did someone send you the link to the interface to post? ;)

Wikipedia has an interesting definition, where we [Berlin] qualify: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis

… a population of 50,000 or greater has been used as a de facto standard in the United States to define a metropolis.

    LMAO.
That’s quite an inflationary use of the term, isn’t it? So every bigger village would be a metropolis… even Potsdam. Nevermind. :)

the real question is – ist Berlin eine Weltstadt?

    Yeah, in the U.S..

I must say, I like this part:

“…is a major city, in most cases with a population of at least one million inside its urban area, and over half million inhabitants in the city proper.”

    Sounds about right.

    William, wir sind Weltstadt. ;-)
