Where Have All The Murals Gone…

Gardinenspannerei With the ongoing advance of the renovation of the city of Berlin many things disappear: cheap rents, lead-pipes, Berlin-born people over the age of 5, gray-brown houses, coal-burning stoves… not everything turns out as nice as tourist-guidebooks show it, not everything is as bad as those people who already lived here when everything was still sooo special and different and cheap and free want you to believe. However there is something I think it is a great pity to loose. I am talking about those old murals, advertisements and shopsigns of times long past. Fortunatly some houseowner also seem to think alike and preserve the vintage wallpaintings. But everytime I see a scaffold being set-up in front of a house with one of those murals on it I am worried about wether it will just be painted over or be saved.
Here you can find some examples… let’s hope many houseowner have a feeling for nostalgia, too…

Good catch! Also on the Flickr pictures. I love to see those as well. In Kreuzberg there is plenty evidence of a yesterday.

Which is good to see – even though not all of our German yesterday is “good” – that we had a yesterday and it’s not yet all swept away. Have to preserve some of it at least.
