because i will be flying back from Nuremburg just in time to run down to my German conversation course at the Goethe Institut but:

Art critic Heinz-Peter Schwerfel will be premiering his film Berlin - arm aber sexy at the Martin Gropius Bau on the 7th of May at 19:00. The film, with music from Johannes Brahms, Lychee Lassi, MIA, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Stereo Total and others, examines Berlin’s happening art scene and the locust like behaviour of the artists, critics, collectors and charlatans that have descended on the city in the past few years. Schwerfel himself will be in attendance along with Sabrina van der Ley, artistic director of ART FORUM Berlin, and a bunch of other art mavens. Since entrance is FREE…yes…FREE, you can expect a crowd of penniless types like yourself so get there early. But If you - like me - end up missing the premiere, you can also catch it showing on arte on the 5th of June.

Two New to See

Two new exhibitions are opening at Architekturforum Aedes this evening:

Dutch photographer Erik-Jan Ouwerkerk, a resident of Berlin the past twenty years, presents his exhibition UNITED CITY: Urban Portraits From Caracas to Shanghai. A photographic meditation on urbanity at the beginning of the 21st Century.

meanwhile, architects Nieto Sobejano introduce themselves to Berlin. Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, architects of the Congress Center of Expo 2008 in Zaragoza, are the darlings of today’s Spanish architectural scene. The exhibition Arquitectura Concreta provides an overview of their current projects, “characterized by fascinating spatial configurations and incisive formal idioms”.

if you’re the kind that get’s all hot and bothered by phrases like “Free Form Tubular Structures” and “Parametric Pointclouds” then you’ve probably been planning next week’s outfits for months. but if not you still have time to register for UdK’s 3D Modelling Symposium for architects, industrial designers and engineers. just remember - stay away from stripes with checks…

Pale Tunnel

At the Maribel López Gallery, Elín Hansdottir has designed a dimly lit, white tunnel that tilts downwards and zigzags across the gallery space. In this work, Hansdóttir sets out to heighten awareness of our body through the loss of our usual spatial bearings. Visitors are thus persistently exposed to a spatial experience of decentralisation, disorientation, fragmentation and insecurity. Since there is no noticeable physical difference between ourselves and the objects without, our ability to conceptualize our surrounding space becomes jaded. Not for the claustrophobic or easily spooked!

Madelon Vriesendorp @ Aedes Am Pfefferberg

Vriesendorp was one of the founding members of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (together with Rem Koolhaas and Elia and Zoe Zenghelis) and a resident teacher at the AA for over a decade. The World of Madelon Vriesendorp: Paintings/Postcards/Objects/Games is an exhibition that brings together the Dutch artist’s wildly diverse practices from the past thirty-five years, including painting, drawing, collecting, recycling, sculpture and psychological gamedevising as well as the serious business of collecting what Walter Benjamin once called ‘the trash of history’.
