Coming up in July: Dubstep in Berghain

Berghain will become a dubstep heaven for one Friday, 11th of July. I’m already very excited because this is one of my favorite spots here in Berlin. It has got just about every feature I like in clubs: it is located in a nice industrial building, there’s great crowd and spectacular sound system by Funktion One. Last Saturday over there was great but I guess this will be a night from another planet. Mala of the Digital Mystikz fame (+ Shackleton, Appleblim, Distance and Scuba) will definitely go deep here. One thing is not for sure: how many of the dubstep heads will get in because of the now-and-then-selective door policy? I think it won’t be a problem but I think it’s better to be there on time when these dudes play.

I’m still not the biggest fan of the Berlin nightlife rhythm which requires me to stay up until the sun is already high up on the sky. But there’s so many good nights to go out that I’ve learned to take that disco nap in the early evening to get energized. But to say it clearly at least once: this night is going to be great.

Der Berliner Kurier titelte, “Tatmotiv Kult-Telefon - Handy-Räuber stachen Designer nieder”. Oha!

Techno Viking

An oldie but goldie from 2000. The area around Rosenthaler Strasse (which is the street he is dancing on) looks pretty different nowadays.

Chrome on Saarbrücker Strasse

Chrome on Saarbrücker Strasse
As I was walking to Alexanderplatz to catch the S-Bahn to Warschauer Strasse on Sunday morning, I noticed that my closest street corner had been freshly painted. FLS crew had done a nice job by getting rid of the tired old murals and now the wall looks shiny and neat. The rest of this wall can be found here.
But the question remains: what’s your favorite color? Mine is chrome and there’s no doubt about that.

On lockdown

ON LOCKDOWN

Just in time for May 1st 2008 the streets outside in Friedrichshain (between Simon-Dach-Strasse and Ostkreuz) are so busy with people you wouldn’t know where they suddenly all come from. Especially the area around Boxi is surrounded by police and pretty heavy gear. Roadblocks in the making and helicopters patrolling impatiently above. Parts of Boxi are enlightended as if it was daytime and most, if not all the shops in the area are already closed down.

I just made my way up to the Kaisers at Warschauer Strasse and the people go shopping crazy as if it was Christmas time or new year, or some sort of natural disaster cutting them off for multiple days from the outside. My bank at the corner closed this afternoon and put extra thick plexiglass in all windows which are usually see-through, if you know what I mean. Check out the picture above, you can usually see through the door and for the next 24 hours you can’t.

I am pretty surprised that some lone shops are still open, they probably don’t know it better yet.

here it comes again

Cookies

So I checked out Cookies last weekend. It’s one of those hipster restaurants in Mitte. It’s a pretty interesting place, not just because we had to search for the entrance (it is hidden behind bottles of beer and dumpsters in the back of Behrenstrasse 55), but also because of the interior (open kitchen, seating, …) and all the food is vegetarian - but maybe that’s just Mitte-chique. :-)

I wrote more about it on Qype (in English). All in all, we had a good time and if you need to go somewhere to impress your guests or date without ending up at the Riz, Cookies is probably it.

SGS rooftop

This picture is from the backside of Friedrichstraße, I took this series of pictures last year on a early Sunday morning (it was summer :-)) after shopping at supermarket at Friedrichstraße. And since I just figured out the other week how to do nifty photomerges, here is the result.

I haven’t checked recently on the progress of the construction site, but the rooftop et all should be gone by now.

Since I’ve been addicted to merging many pictures, allow me to plug my other stitches.

DMIG back (soon)
