Greenpeace (Germany) labels Vattenfall to be the most environmental unfriendly producer of energy in all Germany. Greenpeace’s study claims that Vattenfall issues 890g (gramm) CO2 per KWh (kilowatt-hour).

Greenpeace says that Vattenfall’s East German brown coal power plants are alone responsible for a total of 53.8 million tons of CO2 per year. And because Vattenfall is improving its infrastructure in Boxberg, Hamburg-Moorburg and Berlin-Klingenberg, it will add to those 53.8 another 18 million tons (of CO2) per year in the future.

Now take a deep, deep breath — and then head over to reportmainz.de (upper right, in German, “Schwarzbuch Vattenfall”) for the study.

The other day I noticed that in almost three months it hasn’t gotten any better around Ostkreuz. In fact, I think it’s gotten only worse. There are more constructions, more blocked roads, it’s louder and I it sure as hell doesn’t look like it’s over any time soon.

Now, it sounds like people living around the Ostkreuz construction site get super lucky the following weekend. I got a nice flyer yesterday, which told me that there is gonna be all day and all night construction work. They probably would not announce that if it wouldn’t mean “loud”.

Some people living here, were lucky to score a Ersatzschlafraum (which is probably a hotel), for the rest – it’s over on Sunday by 6 AM. Until then, go out and party. Or something. Can’t? Sucks to be you!

Today I called the office of the city of Berlin and after being re-routed from office (PR > Umweltamt > PR > Verwaltung für Inneres > Ortnungsamt Neukölln > Bürgertelefon der Polizei (4664-4664) > PR der Polizei) to office for a while, I got ahold of someone who gave me a few numbers on the overall usage of the Umweltplakette (”environmental sticker”) in Berlin.

In case some of you don’t know/remember – starting from 01/01/2008 you need a sticker for your car to drive inside the S-Bahn ring. There are four different kind – one, two, three and to the four (!). All designated your “level of access” to the designated zone. Currently only 2 (red), 3 (yellow) and 4 (green) are allowed in the inner circle and there are some set dates such as 01/01/2010 from which on only 4 will be allowed in the city. So this is how it works.

Now the stats…

description

totals

# of cars registered in Berlin

1.2 million

# of cars without a sticker (02/01/2008 – 04/08/2008)

10,873

“parked” (of the previous)

~600

fine

40 EUR

total fined

434,920 EUR

In addition to the fine, you also score 1 point at the register for traffic offenders in Flensburg.
