World Cup opening in Berlin
As I can see there is still some confusion about this matter, let’s clear things out: There will be no official opening ceremony in the Berliner Olympiastadion but at Brandenburger Tor.
The opening gala at Berliner Olympiastadion was canceled by Fifa for strange reasons. Officially it was said that Fifa was worried about the condition of the grass. For dismantling stages and equipment and assembling the grass ground there would have “only” been 5 days.
Rumor has it that Fifa was not very satisfied with the costs (estimated 25 million €) of the opening gala planned by André Heller and sales of the tickes, which cost from 100 – 750€ (for not even seeing a game), did not go very well.
Anyway, there is going to be an opening ceremony in Berlin, although without Fifa officials.
It’s going to take place on June 7th from 6.30 pm in the area between Brandenburger Tor and Großer Stern on the Straße des 17. Juni. This is also where the “Fanmeile” will be, an area where world cup related events will take place and all 64 matches will be displayed on large-scale displays until the final at July 9th.
They had some sort of ceromony in Frankfurt, Main tonight.
