Beat the Heat

tokyo.jpgif you need to take a breather from the summer heat check out the “Berlin-Tokyo / Tokyo-Berlin. The Art of Two Cities” show at the air conditioned Neue Nationalgalerie. I went last night and cooled down after a day spent slaving over a hot keyboard, wandering through the exhibit illustrating over a hundred years of artistic exchange between the two capitals. Works by well known german artists such as Kirchner and Grosz hang alongside the works of japanese artists whose works either influenced or were influenced by them. As the twentieth century proceeds the historical parallelism of the two cities is clearly visible in the work. Also impressive and worth checking out are the superpsychedelic installations of japanse artist Yayoi Kusama, who was able to translate a childhood hallucination into an artistic career defined by her obsession with polka dots….

at the Neue Nationalgalerie until 3 October 2006
Potsdamer Stra├če 50
10785 Berlin
