53 years
ago today marks the 1953 uprising in East Germany which was eventually brutally supressed. To mark the occasion flowers were laid at the Finance Ministry on Leipziger Strasse which in 1953 was serving as the House of Ministries. It was here that workers had gathered in what was initially a protest against a 25% increase in work norms but quickly became a general demonstration against the SED goverment which spread throughout the DDR. Later that day the protesters would find themselves battling Soviet T-34 tanks and units of the Volkspolizei and by the time uprising was finally crushed there would be over a hundred of the demonstrators dead and countless injured.
I totally forgot about this.
the DDR tried to forget about it also!
