King vom Prenzlauer Berg
Since Mitte seems to eat almost all other districts on our blog. Here’s something about Berlin’s #1 baby and family-friendly district: Prenzlauer Berg. Or something…!
The video is pretty dope – and obviously “younger” – and the song is called “King vom Prenzlauer Berg” (King of Prenzlauer Berg) by the Berlin-based band called City. The song tells a story of a guy who always gets into fights, back from when Prenzlauer Berg was not the district of families and unemployed actors. The title was released on City’s 1978 album also called “City”.
East Germans will most likely know about the band City, because they were one of the few so called “rock bands” of the former GDR (East Germany). But if you know city and do not recall this song, you probably know “Am Fenster”, which is – I’d say – their most well known piece.
City was established in the 70s when rock music was still frowned on and they have been around for for 35 years now. They first met in 1971 and in 1972 they gave their first “concert” where they primarily covered Santana, The Rolling Stones and other bands from the West.
Following this evening, they released 15 albums of their own music until today.
While some of the band split in 1982 they continued to play concerts and release albums through the nineties. City reunited in parts in 1992 and finally with its original cast in 1995. Since then they have been on tour every year and just released their last album “YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!” about a week ago.
